Believe it or not, I have a snapping turtle story.
I used to run a newspaper in Henry County, near Louisville. I had a reporter working for me, a very "city-fied" young man, and I mentioned that I had almost run over a box turtle on the way to work that morning. He didn't know what a box turtle was, so I explained it. I don't like running over any animal, especially these guys, and I told him so.I said that I will even stop and move them on across the road on occasion. Well, about a week later, he was late coming to work. When he arrived, his clothes were all muddy. "Sorry I'm late, boss," he said. "I stopped to move one of those turtle out of the road. It was a BIG one!"
"Really? Good for you. How big was it?"
"Gosh, it was about eighteen inches across!"
"Uh.... and it was all muddy and wet?"
"Yeah, and the thing kept hissing at me and wriggling around."
"Steve, did this turtle have a smooth shell, or did it have like raised sections on it's shell?"
"All raised and lumpy."
Needless to say, he didn't rescue a box turtle. He stopped and picked up a snapper. He said he felt stupid, but I told him that not many people will help out an animal, much less one as hateful and dangerous as a snapping turtle. I also cautioned him to stay away from them in future.

I've been told that box turtles are mainly land creatures. See, now I have to go look it up!st33ve0 wrote:I was surprised to find a box turtle that had been run over by my mother in her driveway a couple weeks ago...we're not even that close to water which is why I was confused to find it there.
