Frangible Ammo Answers

Post by S Lance » Sun Feb 21, 2010 4:12 pm

The first day of spring-like weather inspired me to answer MRB's question from the previous frangible ammo thread. "What will it do to a popper?"

Since this popper has been laying in the same spot since I've belonged to the club, I figured it would make a good test subject. I chrono'ed the rounds today as well. All shots were fired from a 12.5" WOA barrel and all the ammo functioned 100%. The temperature was in the mid-50's.

First up, the Winchester 55 grain, 5.56mm load.

Velocity was 2824fps which is zipping right along from the sbr. This is what it did to the popper. The shots were fired from 25 yards.

Next up the Fiocchi 45 grain .223 load. This one chrono'ed at 2821.

Note the dents in the back of the popper.

Since I figured I'd already trashed the popper, I decided to throw a couple of 55 grain .223 fmj rounds at it. Being a chicken (and not wearing armor), I decided to shoot these at 50 yards.

The bottom couple of hits are the fmj rounds.

So, to answer MRB's question, I don't think frangible ammo is going to work for our poppers. It looks like we are stuck with pistol rounds.:(

Damnit! It was a good idea, while it lasted.

Now I've got to call Midway and cancel the 100 rnds I ordered yesterday.

Thanks for the testing, though.
Carbines rule-pistols suck in general!

Since the frangible idea didn't work out, hopefully most of the rifle shoots will be paper only so we can use 223.
Thanks for the testing Scott.
